What is Checkers?
Checkers is a two-player game played on an 8X8 grid with 64 randomly arranged light and dark squares. Each player has pieces, commonly referred to as “men” or “checkers,” that can be placed in the darker squares of the three rows nearest them. The game aims to take the entirety of your opponent’s pieces or stop the players from making legal moves.
How to Play:
- Setting up The Board: Place the table between your opponents, each player in a different position. Set each piece on one of the squares in those three rows closest to the player. Alternate between light and dark pieces.
- Moving your Pieces: Players alternate moving their pieces diagonally across the darker squares on the board. Pieces can only move diagonally and cannot move forward until they get to the opposite side of the board, at which point they turn “kings” and can move both back and forward.
- The Capture of Opponent’s Pieces If a piece belonging to a player is next to the opponent’s piece and there is an unfilled space in front of it, the player may “jump” over the opponent’s piece and then capture it. The piece captured is then eliminated from the game. Players are able to continue making several jumps in one turn if it is possible.
- Kinged pieces: If a piece of a game gets to the other side of the table, it’s “kinged” and can move diagonally forward and backward. Kinged pieces can move more and are more vital than standard pieces.
- The Game is Winning: The game ends when one player takes all their opponent’s pieces or when a player is unable to take legal action. The player who has pieces left on the board or with the most pieces of their wins.
